Hear the voice of my petitions, when I cry to you, when I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place. Psalms 28:2

I receive numerous requests for prayers from people around the world and I count it a blessing to be able to assist. In most situations I go beyond my daily prayer and make a formal petition before God on their behalf. The power of prayerful petitions can change the dynamics of situations and open doors to solutions. When I’m in the midst of a petition, I can feel the powerful presence of God, strengthening my own spiritual growth while helping others.

I’m of the mindset that every believer should know how to make a petition to God for themselves and their family. The goal of any honest ministry is to empower people not make them dependent on the ministry for something they can do for themselves. Unfortunately, the Bible doesn’t provide instructions on how to make a petition although there are continuous references to Patriarchs, Prophets and other notable persons conducting petitions. I would like to share with you one of my basic approaches to petitions. The following is a credible method I have used for years that has always brought me an answer from God. First, I need to make sure you understand what a petition is and manage expectations as to results.

What is a Petition?

Listen, my God, and hear. Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city called by Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You based on our righteous acts, but based on Your abundant compassion. Daniel 9:18

A petition to God is a formal request for His response on a particular issue. You might be in a financial hardship, marital problem, pressing job situation or having a family crisis that requires you to make a formal and special petition to God. You need God to either send you a sign or move in the situation.

Petitions are carried to God in the form of a prayer. Sometimes in our prayers we ask for many blessings and include several issues. As the old folks would say, we throw everything but the kitchen sink into our prayers. A petition is different because it is presented for one specific situation and the delivery is one of humbleness, humility and formal acknowledgement of the Supreme Creator of Heaven and Earth.

Who can make a Petition?

Never worry about anything. Instead, in every situation let your petitions be made known to God through prayers and requests, with thanksgiving. Phil 4:6

A voice is heard on the bare heights, the weeping [and] the petitions of the children of Israel; because they have perverted their way, they have forgotten Yahweh their God. Jer 3:21

In both the Old and New Testaments it is indicated that any person of God can make a petition.  You don’t have to be a Holy person in order to stand before God with a petition but you do need to believe in God.

What you need to know before attempting a petition:

A petition is not some magical incantation for an instant miracle. If this is your mindset, don’t even attempt a petition. A petition is very serious. You are lifting a situation and the lives of those involved before God to be divinely measured and addressed accordingly.

Be careful of any hidden motives you might have, indiscretions of those involved and potential repercussions. Manage expectations according to the quality of the situation and those involved. God’s justice is no respecter of persons. You might be asking for one thing but God will deliver on another that is more important in the situation.

When you conduct a petition, having the right mindset toward God can go along ways. The modern mindset has no real reverence for God or fear of God. People only go to God when they want or need something, treating the Creator like an ATM machine or worse, Santa Claus. In the modern mind, God serves man and not the other way around. In order to do petitions, you have to change this mindset. Petitions to God require genuine reverence and fear that must come from within and not pretending.

The last thing you need to know before attempting a petition, is that you don’t tell God what to do. God will give you a sign or response to the situation according to His Divine Will. If you can’t handle receiving a response not of your liking then don’t do a petition. Be ready and willing to act on whatever response God gives you. The worst thing you can do is ask and then ignore God’s response because it’s not to your liking.

How to do a petition:

I hope you have not skipped the previous section and skimmed to this part. Key points are listed above that you need to be aware of.

If you have read through the key points above and understand what to expect, let me show you the basic approach that has worked for me. When doing petitions, try to find a quiet place. I will list these by 5 simple components. Do these in your own words while making the petition, they have to come from your heart:

1. Acknowledging God
The very first thing you should do in not only a petition but in daily prayers is acknowledge God as the Creator of all Creation. Acknowledge God as the one true God. Acknowledge His Divine power over all in existence. The Patriarchs and Prophets always acknowledged the ways of God in their prayers.

2. Bowing in spirit before God
I always state who I am by calling out my name, the reason I do this is to also announce my approach before God. Coming before God in humility and humbleness which is further acknowledgement of God’s superiority over me as His created. This also helps me to eliminate any traces of my ego by submitting myself before God.

3. Stating the cause of this petition
State the reason you are making this petition. Tell the good, bad and the ugly. If compassion, forgiveness or mercy is needed for anything done now is the time to lay it before God. Nothing but the pure truth is required when stating the reason for the petition.

4. Request God’s movement in the situation
Ask God to move in this situation. If you are asking for a sign, ask God to give it to you. If you are asking for God to help you in this situation, simply state it.

5. Affirmation of faith
As a testament of my faith, I tell how God has moved in previous situations of my life or the situations of others. I also close by asking that His will be done in the situation.

Now that you have made the petition, you will have to be spiritually alert and open to receive God’s sign or response to your situation. I restate that this has worked for petitions for myself and others. Every time you do a petition and see God work in the situation afterwards, it’s very moving and spiritually strengthening. What I have outlined is what has worked for me and I’m sure if you are genuine, humble and reverent in your heart it will work for you too. Nothing fancy, just keep it truthful and simple.

I hope this information proves useful for your situations.

May God bless and cover you in the situations of your life, aligning you with His Divine Order, so that every obstacle can be overcome, every problem can be solved, every need met and the path forward that of His will.
